Vermont State Lottery - Our Mission

Consistent with our legislative mandate, we will design, regulate, promote, distribute, and sell lottery games of chance in Vermont. In doing this we must preserve the integrity of the games, maximize profitability, and make a significant contribution to the Education Fund while maintaining the dignity of the state and the general welfare of the people. Thus, the balance between providing funds for the state's Education Fund and a strong "Play Responsibly" message to the public.
In carrying out this mission, we attempt to arrive at growth projections that not only reflect what we are capable of achieving, but also those that are consistent with past history, other lotteries, and the desire to keep the growth consistent and manageable.

Vermont Lottery - Where the Money Goes

Since July 1998, all Lottery profits have been transferred to the state's Education Fund.  Prior to that, all profits went to the state's General Fund.

The games offered by the Vermont Lottery are:

  • Powerball
  • Mega Bucks
  • Pick 3
  • Pick 4
  • Triple Play
  • Instant Games

Vermont participates in the Tri-State Lottery. The states included in the Tri-State Lottery are Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine.

In the Megabucks and Powerball games, the jackpot winner has the option to choose cash or annuity payments.  The winner will only get approximately half of the jackpot when he or she chooses the cash payment option because this option is a one-time-only cash payment of the available jackpot prize money. The cash option represents the amount of money in the jackpot prize pool at the time of winning, and is generally 40-50% less than the estimated annuitized amount because it does not contain the interest that would have accumulated over the years of incremental prize payments.
