The idea of starting a Maine lottery operation was first campaigned by Rep. Arthur Genest of Waterville in 1973. When the public voted in 1973, the answer was a resounding “yes,” and Lottery operations began in 1974.
Then-governor Kenneth M. Curtis drew the first lottery numbers on June 27, 1974. The numbers were printed on large rubber balls and drawn from a gumball machine. Ivan Lazure, a Lewiston mechanic, was the first winner taking home a $20 jackpot.

PALERMO LOTTERY PLAYER WINS $1,000,000!
Janet Decosta of Palermo, Maine won $1,000,000 in the Bonus Spectacular Grand Prize Drawing held at the Maine Mall on October 12, 2005. Janet was one of four finalists to participate in the exciting event, which was televised live at 6:15 p.m. by TV stations throughout the state. Congratulations Janet!!
